SHELBY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, PARENT NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year!! I can’t believe that summer is nearly over and that in a two short weeks our halls will be filled again.

Freshmen/New Student Orientation
All freshmen and new students should plan on attending our orientation on Thursday, August 19. You will pick up your schedules and other information in the commons and we will meet in the gym. This session will last about 30 minutes and will be followed by our Open House. Freshmen parents and students should plan on attending the Open House on the 19th as well. Please arrive a little early so that we can get everyone’s schedule distributed and start on time.

High School Open House
The Shelby High School Open House will be on Thursday, August 19, at 7:00 pm. This is for all high school students and parents. You will have the opportunity to meet all of your teachers, find your lockers, and pay school fees for this year.

We will run an abbreviated schedule as follows:
1st block- 7:00-7:10, 2nd block- 7:14-7:24, 3rd block- 7:28-7:38
Homeroom- 7:42-7:47, 4th block- 7:52-8:02

After the 4th block class, you will have the chance to find and open lockers, meet second semester teachers, and pay fees. Please make plans to attend on the 19th.

2010-2011 Schedules and Fees
Juniors and senior schedules were mailed last week. You should also have a letter from Mr. Grady explaining some things to look for on your schedules. Sophomore schedules will be mailed this week. Freshmen will get their schedules before Orientation. You may pay fees the night of Open House or from 7:00 am-3:00 pm on Friday, August 20th.

Dates to Remember
There are a few dates you should mark on your calendars now. We will have four 2 hour early release dates: September 22, December 8, February 2, and April 6. Please note that the May 12 date is a change from previously released District calendars. Students will be dismissed at 12:40 on these dates. Parent Teacher Conferences will be on September 29, December 1, and March 30. All conferences will be from 3:15-7:45. Please plan on attending conferences.

ProgressBook Passwords
We will be sending out user names and passwords to all parents again this year so that you can monitor your child’s grades. We do have to disable the accounts at the end of each year and set up new accounts for everyone. Non-custodial parents may also have an account for their children by contacting Mrs. Kurtzman in the Attendance Office.

Student Absences
As much as we would like to see every student in class everyday, we know that there will be times they will be sick or have an appointment. Please try to schedule appointments after school as much as possible. If your child is absent from school, please call the Attendance Office at 419-342-6584. If we do not make contact with a parent, your child must bring in a note signed by a parent to excuse the absence. Any time a student misses school because of an appointment, please get a note from the doctor or dentist stating the time of the appointment. If your child will miss school for an extended time due to illness, please call Mr. Calver or Mrs. Haney so that we can work with your child’s teachers to get assignments. When requesting assignments, please allow at least one day for teachers to have enough time to gather work. The attendance policy is explained starting on page 15 of the student planner.

Important Paperwork
All students will receive an Emergency Medical Form, a Free-Reduced Lunch form, and an Insurance form on the first day of school. These need to be returned as soon as possible. The Emergency Medical Form is especially important if your child is hurt and needs medical assistance and we cannot contact a parent. Those eligible for free or reduced lunch last year will still qualify for the program for the first two weeks. After that time we need the proper paperwork.

School Pictures
Ohio School Pictures will be at SHS on Wednesday, September 1st. Students wishing to purchase pictures should return the form and money on that day. Please make checks payable to Ohio School Pictures. Forms will be passed out during the first week of school. Any senior who does not wish to use a professional photographer for senior portraits should have their picture taken on the 1st.

Release of Student Directory Information
Recent legislation requires a school district to release names, addresses, and phone numbers of students in grades 10-12 to United States military recruiters who request them. The law states that if information is released to colleges, than the same information must be made available to the military. If you do not want information to be released to colleges and the military, parents should request, in writing, that the information not be released. Feel free to call the main office if you have any questions

Flexible Credit Options
Beginning this school year students will have the opportunity to earn high school credits through other means than the traditional method of taking a class. Parents and students have the option to design an educational plan that meets the needs of the student and also meets the academic requirements of the Shelby City Schools. If you are interested in this option, applications are available in the high school Guidance office. Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Red Cross Bloodmobiles
Shelby High School will again this year host some Red Cross Bloodmobiles. We will ask students who are willing and meet the requirements to consider donating blood. Anyone over the age of 17 is permitted to donate without parental consent. Students who are 16 years old can donate with parental consent. As soon as the dates are set we will send out more information.

Feel free to call me if you have any questions or concerns. I hope everyone has a wonderful year.

Go Whippets!

Graduation Information
Graduation is set for Friday, May 28th at 7:30 pm. There are some other important dates coming up for seniors. We will take the senior panoramic picture at 7:45 am on Wednesday, April 14th. Seniors should make sure to get an order form and bring money on the 14th. Checks should be made out to Ohio School Pictures. Pioneer seniors need to make sure they are here if they want to be included in the photo. We will have a senior class meeting on Wednesday, April 21st at 7:45 am in the David A. Jones Little Theater. We will hand out a calendar of important dates at this meeting, so it is important that Pioneer seniors are in attendance. Caps and gowns will be handed out at SHS on May 12th and at Pioneer on May 14th. All fees and obligations must be paid before we will distribute a student’s cap and gown. All fees and obligations must be taken care of before graduation or the student will not be able to take part in the ceremony. Please call Mr. Gies if you have any questions or concerns.

Prom
Prom will be held on Saturday, May 1st at the Kehoe Center. The Grand March will begin at 7:30 pm and the dance will be from 8:30-11:30 pm. We have adjusted the time this year to accommodate the large number of students in the Grand March. We again ask parents to please NOT park in the lots that are blocked off so that we have room to park student cars and that parents please consider carpooling if you are planning on attending the Grand March. After Prom will be held from midnight to 2:30 am at SHS. The Junior Class parents have planned another wonderful event that is open to all SHS students, even if they did not attend the dance. There is a separate flyer enclosed with this newsletter from the junior parents asking for your help.

Scarlet S Yearbook
This is the last call for yearbook orders with name stamping (personalization). Anyone wishing to purchase a name stamped yearbook must do so by Friday, April 16th. We will be placing the order for personalized books on this date. Personalized yearbooks are $53.00. Non-personalized books may be ordered until May 14th at the cost of $47.00. We offer pages for all sports, all elementaries, middle school, band, FFA, basic Shelby pages, choir, theatre, prom, graduation and more!

Mock Crash
All SHS and PCTC juniors will be attending this year’s Mock Crash held at the Richland County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, April 20th. Permission forms will be sent home the week of April 12th. We will leave SHS and PCTC at 9:00 am and return at approximately 10:45 am. This is an annual event that is attended by all of the schools in Richland County.

Levy Campaign
We are again asking for your support for the Shelby City School levy campaign on Tuesday, May 4th. The levy will raise funds to construct a new high school and a permanent improvement levy that will be used to help renovate our current buildings. Russell school will be reopened as a Kindergarten-5th grade building, the middle school will be torn down, and the current high school will be a grades 6-8 middle school. Central will remain open for the board office and practice space, but will not be used as an elementary school. Please call the high school office if you would like a yard sign or if you have any questions.

Last Day of School
Our last day of school for grades 9-11 will be on Tuesday, June 1st. We will take final exams that day.

Adult Drug Education Seminar
The mayors of Shelby, Bellville, Ontario, Mansfield, and Lexington are sponsoring the “Operation Street Smart” program. The goal of the program is to provide up to date narcotics information on trends, technology, paraphernalia, concealment techniques and physiological effects on those individuals who deal with today’s youth on a daily basis. The program will be held at the Ontario Middle School auditorium on Tuesday, April 20, from 5:30-9:30 pm and is free of charge. Please consider attending this informative and highly acclaimed program.

The end of the year is always a very busy time. Please make sure that your child keeps up with their homework and projects. You can contact your child’s teachers through email or a phone call if you have any questions or concerns. Our athletic schedule is very full for the spring. Try to take in a baseball or softball game, a track meet, or a tennis match if you get the chance.

December 2009
TECHNOLOGY SURVEY
One of the major impacts in education is that we have to prepare students for the 21st Century, which means that schools need to change some of the ways we transfer information and work with students. We are trying to figure out just what technological resources our students, teachers, and parents have access to and a few other questions about technology. There is a survey that we are asking students, staff and parents to take. It does not take long and the results will be extremely helpful. The survey link is on the Shelby City Schools website at http://www.shelbyk12.org. You may also access the survey at http://www.speakup4schools.org/speakup2009/. The secret word to enter the survey is whippets2009. Please take a few minutes when you can to answer the questions. The survey is open until December 18th.

HOLIDAY BOOKFAIR
On Saturday, December 12, Shelby High School is celebrating literacy at our Barnes and Noble Bookfair. Families are invited to the Mansfield Barnes and Noble to shop for books, view an art show by SHS art students, and listen to songs from some of the Seussical Jr. cast. Throughout the day students, from the Teaching Professions class and the SHS Bookclub will be reading Christmas stories in the children’s section of Barnes and Noble and helping kids create a Christmas craft, so feel free to bring your kids while you shop!

Barnes and Noble will contribute a percentage of the sales from this day to our school library. This special offer includes all purchases in the store, including the coffee stand. All you have to do is bring the attached voucher when you go. If you forget it, just tell a cashier that you would like to support Shelby High School, and he or she will ensure that our school gets credit for your purchases. Remember, books make a wonderful Christmas gift!

SCARLET S YEARBOOK
Yearbooks can still be ordered at the price of $42.00 or $48.00 with name stamping until January 1st. After that date all books will increase to $47.00 or $53.00 with name stamping. As in the past, we will NOT order extra books. Please reserve your copy today!

A final reminder to all senior parents: senior and baby pictures need to be submitted via disk or email (no hard copies please) by January 1st. Please keep in mind that the last day of school before Christmas break is Tues. Dec. 22nd. You (or the photographer) can submit an email so she can respond to you. She will write you back with the procedure to forward your photos to her via email. Click on her name to send a form-based email to Amanda Mahon to initiate this process.

PDA's are still available for purchase to any senior parent. PDA's do make a nice gift for graduates! Contact Mrs. Mahon for more information.

GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
Make sure that you are checking the Guidance Updates on the Shelby City Schools website. Mr. Grady does a tremendous job distributing information regarding scholarships and other types of financial aid. We will begin scheduling for the 2010-2011 school year sometime in February. The course description book that is on-line is in the process of being revised, but it could serve as a guideline if you are interested in looking at classes for next year. The career pathways section is also a good resource.

Attention Junior and Senior Parents - There will be a financial aid informational meeting on January 14 at 6:30 in the David A. Jones Little Theater. More information will follow, but please make plans to attend this very worthwhile and informative meeting.

ATTENDANCE CALLS
We have seen a steady number of students sick the past month. Please remember to keep your child at home if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms. If you are calling your son or daughter off school due to illness, please use the attendance phone line at 419-342-6584. This is a voice mail number, but Mrs. Kurtzman checks the messages several times a day. By using this number you are assured that your message will be taken by the person responsible for checking attendance.

SCHOOL CANCELLATION
Now that winter weather is upon us, it may be necessary to cancel school. Any school cancellation or delay will be posted first on the Shelby City Schools website at http://www.shelbyk12.org/ . You may also listen to the following radio stations:

You may also watch WMFD-TV Channel 15 or on the internet at
http://www.northcentralohio.com/ or http://www.am1400.com/ .
Remember also that there may be days where the road is slippery or there may be spots that are more dangerous than others. Please communicate with your child the importance of driving safely and leaving home early enough to make it safely to school.

END OF THE SEMESTER AND EXAMS
We will have final exams on January 8, which is the first Friday when we return from Christmas Break. Please make sure your child prepares for their final exams, which will count as 20% of their final grades. There is no special schedule for final exams since our block schedule allows ample time for testing. Some teachers may exempt students from the final exam if they earned an A in both the first and second quarter. There is a special form for parents to sign if a student is exempt from a final exam. These will be made available the week we return from break.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
On behalf of the staff and students at Shelby High School, we want to wish everyone a joyous holiday season. May your stockings be full of gifts and the time spent with your families be wonderful. Thank you for the opportunity to work with your children. Here’s to a happy 2010!

August 24, 2009
Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year! The start of a new year is always an exciting time. I especially love the first day of school. All of the planning and hard work that goes into each new year comes to fruition and we anxiously wait to see what surprises and challenges this year will bring.

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.
-Wiliam Butler Yeats

These words may never be more true than today. Education in Ohio and in the United States is changing, and we are only beginning to scratch the surface. With the recent passage of the budget bill, the Governor and the Ohio General Assembly have made it clear that education in Ohio must improve. Many in education are resistant to change. We have been through a wide variety of new programs and policies and yet we see the same results. I am very proud of our success at Shelby Senior High School as well as the entire district, but sometimes success can make you less likely to embrace change. Nevertheless, these are exciting times in education and I am eager to work with our staff and students to continue the culture of excellence in the Shelby City Schools.

Yeats was right; education is about lighting the fire of knowledge. We know that students need to be more involved in their education and that they need to possess the ability to dig deeper and ask questions. Students in the near future will be able to earn credits by other means than sitting in the classroom. They will be expected to demonstrate their proficiency on a number of end of course exams instead of the Ohio Graduation Test. They will be required to prove that they are ready for college, and they will have to successfully complete a senior project before they will be allowed to graduate from high school. All of these things will require a concentrated effort among students, teachers, and parents.

I would like to challenge our parents again this year. Please become very involved in your child’s education. Many times we see close to one hundred percent attendance at elementary parent teacher conferences, yet we hardly see any parents at high school conferences. Even though you may be keeping up with your child’s grades on ProgressBook, please take the time and the opportunity to come in and meet with their teachers and find out what is going on in the classroom. We are doing some exciting things and we love to share our success with others.

As we take the next steps into the future of education, there will most certainly be some bumps along the way. We look forward to working with you to overcome any obstacle as we help prepare another generation of citizens.

Go Whippets!!
