Winter
2008 ~ 2009 • Principal’s Message
As we near the midway point of the second grading period and with the holidays
around the corner, it is important to step back and see what we have accomplished
so far this year and realize all of the blessings we have at Shelby Senior High
School. Our students and staff have been hard at work in the classroom. We are
very pleased to have earned an Excellent rating by the State of Ohio, but we
are not going to rest on our laurels. I see new teaching methods being used
in many classrooms, students involved in many activities, and our district continuing
to move ahead.
Every year I am amazed at the giving spirit of our students and staff, and this
year is no exception. We have taken part in many fundraisers and food drives
to help the Shelby community. Student Council continues to take on projects,
our senior football players serve as a mentor to a 6th grade student at Central,
Key Club volunteers for many events in the community, and the list goes on.
This giving spirit was fostered at home, and every member of this community
should be proud of our SHS students.
Recently the latest class of inductees into the Shelby High School Hall of Distinction
was honored at a dinner. Every member of the Hall of Distinction has an amazing
story to tell. Some have worked on Apollo missions, some have played professional
sports, and all have made a difference to others around them. At first I think,
wow it is amazing to think that these people came from Shelby, Ohio. But then
I see first hand the next group of scientists, doctors, and young men and women
who will go on to lead successful lives. The common thread is that they received
a quality education from a school that has unbelievable support from a caring
community.
I want to wish everyone a very joyous and blessed holiday season. I hope that
you find time to enjoy your family and friends. Thank you for all you do to
help the Shelby City Schools.
August 2008
Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year! I hope that everyone was able to enjoy
the summer break and to spend some quality time with family and friends. We
would like to welcome the Class of 2012. I hope that your four years of high
school are memorable and productive. This is also a big year for our seniors.
We always have high expectations for our senior class and I am sure that this
group will have a great year.
Last year was a successful year and we hope to continue the tradition of excellence
at Shelby Senior High School. We met all 12 indicators on the state grade card
and have earned the designation of Excellent by the Ohio Department of Education.
45% of our sophomores scored in the Advanced category on the math test and 43%
scored in the Accelerated or Advanced category in science. This was accomplished
by the hard work and dedication of the staff, students and parents. Education
is truly a team effort. Students at SHS were also able to earn dual credits
in both calculus and anatomy and physiology. This means that students in those
classes earned credit at SHS and through NCSC. These credits are guaranteed
to transfer to any college in Ohio. We will continue to take part in this program
thanks to a grant awarded to NCSC. Our goal is to increase the number of courses
in the program in the future.
There are some new faces at SHS this year. Andrew Guertler will teach freshmen
English and in our Reading Writing Lab. Jason Sanders and Keith Weaver will
join our special needs department. We are very excited to have these three gentlemen
join us.
We have also changed the main schedule a little for this year. Students will
attend a homeroom group everyday after lunch. This will provide a time for students
to get some extra help from teachers or a chance to get caught up on some homework.
Our main focus this year will be to improve the writing skills of our students.
An analysis of data has showed some negative trends in this area and we want
to make sure our students are strong writers. You should expect to see your
son or daughter writing in every class. Please communicate with your child’s
teacher to see how you can help at home. As I stated before, education is truly
a team effort.
I want to thank the Shelby community for your continued support of our students.
Whether at a sporting event or a concert, we always have large supportive crowds.
It is important for our students to see and appreciate the support of the community.
Extra curricular activities provide the opportunity for students to put into
practice the ideals that we teach everyday- respect, teamwork, communication,
and effort.
The start of a new year is always exciting. I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s
smiling faces on August 27th. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions
or concerns.
